Mauvezin Castle
Your campsite near Château de Mauvezin
Around 40 km from your campsite, come and relive medieval times with a visit to the Château de Mauvezin, which marked the border between the Aquitaine and Narbonne regions.
This 11th-century castle of medieval origin, which belonged to the family of the kings of Navarre, including Henri IV, awaits you. Intended to defend the territory, it fell into disuse after the province of Bigorre became part of the Kingdom of France. Its stones were then dismantled and used for other constructions.
Architectural heritage
Now restored, the château is a fine example of southern military architecture. An imposing 15-metre enclosure surrounds a high rectangular keep that towers 37 metres above the ground. Its walls are 3.50 m thick at the base and 2 m at the top, an architectural feat in itself. A 2m-wide parapet walk runs around the fortress quadrilateral.
Today, the restoration is complete, and in addition to its traditional living quarters, the château features two video rooms showing the history of the château and its restoration.

Mauvezin the town
Mauvezin was built along the lines of a 12th-century bastide town. Take the time to stroll along its vast terraces, to reach the central square with its 14th-century covered market and the houses sitting on arcades running all around, as well as the magnificent octagonal Gothic bell tower of Saint Michel church.
In the lower part of the town, you’ll find the typical atmosphere of medieval villages, with narrow, winding streets and numerous covered passageways opening onto unusual places, where you’ll discover a fountain or a well. You won’t be disappointed by your visit to Mauvezin, which has managed to preserve its heritage.
